Getting the perfect gift for a new mom is easy but a lot of people tend to over think it, myself included. But after being on the receiving end of gifts for the last 10 months, I have discovered that it is less about how expensive a gift is but more about how useful it is to me as the new mom.
So, without further ado, here are five useful gifts you can give to a new mom.
1. Body Butter and Scents
New moms need to smell and feel good. The problem is in the first few months of the baby’s life, all their attention and resources goes to the baby. So, it is up to us, the loved ones to pamper them with a collection of body butters and light scents. I would recommend cocoa butter and shea butter lotions; they help with stretch marks and smell good. For perfumes and sprays, I would recommend citrus types of scents; they’ll energize the new mom.
2. Baby diapers and wipes
This is a perfect gift because no matter what they will be needed and used. The important thing to consider with diapers and wipes as gifts is quality. Do not get the cheap quality diapers that will irritate the new baby and the overly scented wipes that may cause an allergic reaction. Brands like Molfix and Pampers are pretty affordable but if you have the money why not buy Huggies!
3. Washing soap and fabric softener
This is an interesting gift choice and best given to a new mom that you are really close to. I say this because the first time I got this as a gift, I was a bit confused and a little offended. Why did this person get me washing soap?!
The truth is new moms, ideally, should wash at least every day. This means that they need more soap than usual, making it a perfect gift. There are special brands for new born clothes like Snow Flakes but I have come to find brands like Ariel and Sunlight are just as mild, not only on the clothes but also on the mom.
4. Baby clothes
Under this category, you can get items like growers, vests, socks, towels, baby blankets among other things. With baby clothes, it is important to remember, bigger is better or know for sure the newborn’s size. For people in Nairobi, Biashara Street is full of baby shops. Of course there’s also The Baby Shop at Junction and Sarit Centre. In Tanzania, Mwenge has a good number of baby shops and there’s The Baby Shop at Mlimani City.
5. Disposable nursing pads
In the first few weeks of the baby’s life, most moms need to keep the breast milk leaks under control, they definitely need nursing pads that they can throw away every two or three hours, making it a perfect gift.
6. Postpartum Girdle
A postpartum girdle is a very useful gift that every mom needs and ought to have to help her get her tummy back to its pre-pregnancy size. Depending on the brand, you might be able to get it in Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), Extra Large (XL) and Extra Extra Large (XXL). The tricky part about getting this as a gift is that you’ll need to know the new mom’s new size.
